บทคัดย่อ

งานวิจัยนี้ศึกษาคำเหมือน 5 คำ ได้แก่ normal regular common ordinary และ usual โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ 1) เพื่อวิเคราะห์ความเหมือนและความแตกต่างของการใช้คำ normal regular common ordinary และ usual ในด้านความหมาย ระดับความเป็นทางการ คำปรากฏร่วม และรูปแบบไวยากรณ์ และ 2) เพื่อเปรียบเทียบข้อมูลที่ได้จากพจนานุกรมและคลังข้อมูลภาษา ข้อมูลที่ใช้ในงานวิจัยนี้ได้มาจาก 1) Longman Advanced American Dictionary 3rd edition 2) Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionaries และ 3) The Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) จำนวน 500 ประโยค โดยใช้โปรแกรม AntCon ในการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลความถี่ จากการวิจัยพบว่า คำทั้ง 5 คำมีความหมายเหมือนกันแต่ยังมีความแตกต่างในรายละเอียด อีกทั้งระดับความเป็นทางการ คำปรากฏร่วมและรูปแบบไวยากรณ์ ด้วยเหตุนี้ คำทั้ง 5 คำจึงไม่สามารถใช้ทดแทนกันได้ในทุกบริบท นอกจากนี้ ผู้วิจัยยังพบว่า คลังข้อมูลทางภาษาสามารถให้ข้อมูลเพิ่มเติมซึ่งไม่ปรากฏในพจนานุกรมอีกด้วย

Abstract

This research investigated five synonyms; normal, regular, common, ordinary and usual. The research objectives are 1) To analyze the similarities and differences of using normal, regular, common, ordinary, and usual in terms of their meaning, degree of formality, collocations and grammar patterns. The data were collected from 1) Longman Advanced American Dictionary 3rd edition 2) Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionaries and 3) The Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) of 500 sentence, using AntCon to analyze the frequencies. It was found that all of 5 synonyms possess the similar meaning, except some details to be used in different contexts. Also, degree of formality, collocations and grammar patterns are used differently. Thus, these 5 synonyms are not interchangeably in all context. Moreover, it was found that the corpus can provide more information and details that do not appear in the dictionaries.
